Today I’m going to talk about what’s really important to me. The things that add real value and happiness to my life. I think this is an important thing to know on the journey to living a minimalist life. As I think most practicing minimalists will tell you, getting rid of the stuff is one thing, but if you don’t know why you’re getting rid of it you’ll accumulate it all again in a few months. I figured that sitting down and spelling out exactly what makes me happy will help me in the future when I’m out and I see something and “Oh I want that!” pops into my head. Because I love to shop and I know that’s something that’s going to happen eventually. So whithout further ado and in no particular order, here are the things that bring me real joy and add immense value to my life…
Music. I LOVE music. Music is like a warm fluffy blanket on a cold day to me. It helps when I’m sad and can’t leave my bed, when I’m happy and out with friends. It’s always there and it honesly has a huge impact on my quality of life. Because of this I know for a fact that having devices to play/listen to music on are essentials for me. My records and player, my phone dock, headphones (although maybe not all three pairs). They’re vital.
Crafts/Art. A definite for me to have a happy and meaningful life. I’m in school getting a degree in crafts at the moment so if that doesn’t speak to the necessity of things in this category I don’t know what will. However, I have a mass quantity of craft supplies. The crafter in me wants to say you can never have too many craft supplies, but the part of me that wants to only have meaningful things in my life is saying that I really don’t need hundreds of skeins of yarn or mountains of paper, or three of the same crochet hook, and all the other things I’ve accumulated over the years. Paring things in this category down to the bare essentials is definitely going to be difficult for me, but I’m focused on my end goal.
Makeup. This, I’m sure, will make some people raise their eyebrows. “but you don’t need makeup to live.” Well, as a resource, you are correct. But makeup is soothing for me. I feel like this might fall under the crafts category in a way, because honestly, makeup is an art form. I love having the ability to create a mini work of art on my face every day that everyone gets to see. I love the way wearing makeup makes me feel, powerful, confident, in charge. Granted I definitely need to pare down here too. I have lots of things I rarely or never use that just sit on my vanity. Again, this will be hard to pare down, but I think I have a system for how I’m going to do this. And my friends will love me when I’m handing out free MAC lipsticks and eyeshadow palettes haha.
My pets. I have two guinea pigs, Zeus and Tallulah. They’re essentially my children even though only one lives at school with me. Obviously, they have things they need and I really don’t keep extra things for them, so there isn’t anything to pare down here. But really this list isn’t “Things I need to pare down”, although that’s kind of how it’s started out, it’s “Things that are important to me”. And my babies are very important to me. I have depression and if you’ve ever struggled with that you’ll know how amazing it can feel to have a warm lovely thing that loves you unconditionally and will cuddle with you when you’re upset. It’s a life saver.
My family. My family are the most supportive amazing people I have ever met. My mom is literally my best friend and I’m insanely close with my immediate family. I think this is something that would make a lot of people’s hypothetical “important” lists.
Fall weather. I don’t think I have ever experienced something as sweet as driving around on a cool fall day with music blasting; or going for a walk when the leaves are starting to change and there’s a slight breeze and you can smell the air changing. It’s a magical experience and it’s my favorite thing in the entire universe.
There are, of course, other things that add great value to my life. Things that make me truly happy, but these are the main things. These are things that I couldn’t in a million years imagine living without. As I mentioned before, these aren’t things that necessarily need to be or can be pared down. That isn’t what this list is about. This list is about what I could never live without. Things that make me happy and that add immeasurable value to my life. I think if you’re thinking about going minimalist, you should make a list like this. I feel like sitting down and thinking about these kinds of things will really help on my journey into the lifestyle. When I’m out and see something that I want, I’ll be able to reflect on what truly matters to me and hopefully that will help me decide if I do or do not truly need whatever I’m considering.
